There has to be a main character who is a strong leader, yet does not become an overbearing boss. Rocky Roads is the head of the detective agency that bears his name. He takes responsibility for his own actions and for the actions of his staff when they are engaged in agency business. Rocky has to be decisive, quick on his feet, and yet compassionate. Rocky’s leadership is to treat his staff as a team with himself as the team leader.
It is vital that Rocky have someone he can trust and depend on. Ellsworth fills that bill perfectly. Quite content to stay in the background, but quite capable of decisive action when the situation call for it. Also a detective agency must have someone skilled in “modern” technology; Ellsworth provides technical skills Rocky does not have.
A detective agency occasionally needs a “strong arm.” Someone who can provide muscle when needed but is smart enough not to overdo the “tough guy” image. Willy brings both muscle and intelligence to the team. His background as a Native growing up in the Southern Swamplands gives him a natural ability to be unobtrusive and clandestine. Rocky, Ellsworth, and Willy each bring a different set of skills to the team, giving the agency the capacity to deal with a wide range of problems.
