The term “comic relief” is used to describe a bit of humor in a serious movie or play. Often Comic Relief fulfills one of the necessary components of a mystery story the sudden occurrence of something unexpected. The unexpected breaks the flow of the story and causes the reader to re-think assumptions. The unexpected may lead eventually to solving the mystery, or it may be a “red herring” leading the reader away from the solution. Humorous events serve the distracting purpose well, and often add dimension to the persona of the characters involved. In The Huge Snooze Rocky suspects something nefarious is happening in a back room of a local bar. Rocky and Ellsworth sneak into the room late at night. As they explore they find photos of nude women. But suddenly the night watchman appears.
