Rocky, Ellsworth and Willy each are the product of very different ethnic, bio-social backgrounds. Their varied backgrounds provide a rich range of talents and skills. But there is an element missing. All three are males, and there is a distinct value in having a woman’s perspective. Gert (Gertrude Gotts) adds a fourth dimension to the team. Born and raised in South America, a product of ridged and strong academic Catholic schools, she is a unique blending of “modern woman” with spiritual depth and both psychological and physical strength. When asked if she could handle the tough stuff detectives sometimes have to deal with she quipped, “I can do everything a male detective can do except use a urinal.” But the agency has a need for a slightly softer female side. Hilda Hardinacker provides yet another dimension to the team. Her rural small community upbringing adds a softer, simpler world view. She appears at times naïve and innocent, but she is nobody’s fool and brings a much needed skill for organizing the office, maintaining routines, and handling all four unique individuals. Hilda is in some ways the opposite of Gert. She is quiet, passive, and content to sit at her desk in the outer office answering the phone, making appointments and greeting new clients. Gert, on the other hand wants to be active, hates paper work and is happiest out on a case. But each in their own way, Hilda and Gert add a feminine quality to the team.
